This is Bai Zhiyong, a representative of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, a national model worker and a senior surveyor of China Railway No.1 Bureau and No.5 Company.

  In 18 years, he only did one thing — — Engineering precision measurement. He is found in high-speed trains, subways, bridges, highways and tunnels in the north and south of the river. In the past 18 years, he is most proud of the fact that he and his team have carefully measured one-tenth of the 22,000 km operating mileage of China high-speed railway.

  Eighteen years ago, Bai Zhiyong graduated from Lanzhou Technical School and went to the construction site of Guangzhou Southeast West Ring Expressway of China Railway No.1 Bureau and No.5 Company. Since then, his life has been inextricably linked with a word — — Measure.

  Carrying a tripod and instrument box on his back, wading through mountains and rivers to make measurements has become his normal life. At the beginning of his career, Bai Zhiyong felt a lack of knowledge: "I graduated from a technical school. If I want to be a qualified railway builder and make achievements in my work, I can only change myself through learning."

  From then on, outside work is learning. He taught himself a junior college and an undergraduate course, and often read until late at night. "Being good at learning and persisting in learning are the biggest characteristics of Xiaobai." Qiao Sheng, deputy director of the engineering management department of China Railway No.1 Bureau and No.5 Company, said.

  Not only that, he also seized all his free time to exercise his professional skills. Take the level used for measurement as an example. When he first entered the business, Bai Zhiyong took the level to the office after work, used the ground, chairs and tables to form a height difference, measured the height difference with a steel tape, and then measured it with a level. Repeat the operation again and again, until it is accurate at your fingertips.

  Strive for Excellence and achieve "error-free" measurement

  How important is precision measurement? Figuratively speaking, it is the eyes of the project builder and the "steering wheel" of the project construction.

  Nanjing Weisan Road Crossing River Tunnel has a total length of 3.6 kilometers, but the cross section reaches 180 square meters. In addition, it needs U-shaped underpass, so the construction is very difficult. In 2012, Bai Zhiyong and his team received the survey task: at the tunnel exit, the receiving steel ring and the outer body have been built, and the survey must ensure that the shield machine with a length of 80 meters can successfully drill out the "fire ring" of the receiving steel ring, with an error of not more than five centimeters!

  This is definitely a challenge! Shield construction has a certain radian and curve, and the coordinates of each point reached during shield operation change. Moreover, influenced by temperature, humidity, peripheral vibration and other factors, many datum points often change.

  In order to make the shield run accurately, Bai Zhiyong took out a "combination boxing" to keep improving. In addition to GPS positioning, he also adopted the "cross traverse network method in the hole" for the first time in China. On the basis of the original measuring ring, at least six measuring rings were added, so that every control point in the shield machine was repeatedly calculated and verified.

  In this way, Bai Zhiyong is still not at ease. How to be more accurate? Bai Zhiyong added another "safety lock" — — Gyro orientation. Using the characteristic that the azimuth determined by the gyro locator is consistent with the geomagnetic field, the occurrence of superposition error is fundamentally and effectively reduced.

  Finally, in July 2015, the shield machine slowly drove out of the receiving well on the south bank of the Yangtze River with a penetration accuracy of only 12 mm, and completed the crossing of the river tunnel.

  Constantly innovate and lead the development level of the industry

  Doing repetitive work well, doing new tasks well, and constantly innovating and improving the level are the words that Bai Zhiyong often teaches his disciples.

  At the beginning of the construction of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway with the highest construction level in the world, Bai Zhiyong received the task of precise control and measurement of the whole track bed of the high-speed railway. However, no matter how it is measured, the error is always too large.

  When checking the equipment again and again, Bai Zhiyong found that the centering rod that must be used for each measurement had an error of 5 mm in design, and the error of the whole ballast bed must be controlled at 3 mm. How to redesign the centering rod? Bai Zhiyong and the team constantly tried and corrected.

  Finally, they found a square iron block of 50 cubic centimeters, cut off a quarter of one corner to make the whole section smooth, and then stuck the iron block on the whole track bed during use. First test, the data is accurate!

  This instrument was later named "Multifunctional Base Template Fine Prism Adapter". It skillfully uses the characteristics of the stability of the fixed mold, overcomes the problem of large tripod error, and provides another basic guarantee for the accuracy and speed of the high-speed rail.
