On the morning of New Year’s Eve, Yang Lei rode out on his electric car and was busy collecting and delivering parcels in several communities in the Nanshan Science and Technology Park area of Shenzhen. This is his 17th year as a courier. He can’t remember how many times he has collected and delivered parcels on New Year’s Eve. "After being a courier, I didn’t go back to my hometown for Chinese New Year very much."

"My wife and two children are in Shenzhen. Many of my brothers’ family members are not around, so I give them the opportunity to go home," Yang Lei said. "When I go to work during the Spring Festival, the company will also give rewards and make up for it after the festival. My wife works in a supermarket and also works during the Spring Festival. Both children are in junior high school. They can understand us, and they can also heat up their own meals and take care of themselves."

SF Express, where Yang Lei is located, has set up a Spring Festival special project incentive package and warm-hearted care activities totaling more than 400 million yuan this year to motivate employees on the job.

Yang Lei told reporters that the peak period for collection and delivery is before the Spring Festival, and the workload during the Spring Festival is not too heavy. He is usually in charge of office building collection and delivery, and went to support the collection and delivery work of residential areas during the Spring Festival. In 4 hours on New Year’s Eve morning, he received more than 80 tickets for delivery. "With various incentives superimposed, the Spring Festival can earn more 10,000 diversified."

Near noon, Yang Lei was about to finish his morning delivery task. Shen Jinfeng, a delivery rider in Longhua District, was busy at this time, riding his electric car between the restaurant and the community.

In 2021, Shen Jinfeng joined Meituan and became a full-time takeaway worker in Longhua Minzhi District. "Takeout is a multi-work and multi-pay industry, as long as you are willing to pay, you will be rewarded," he said. In order to make more money, he has chosen to stay alone in Shenzhen for food delivery during the Spring Festival for two consecutive years.

Meituan invested more than 500 million yuan this year as a rider’s Spring Festival stabilization subsidy, including stay-on-duty subsidies, Spring Festival start red envelopes, duty red envelopes, and ladder return subsidies.

The number of takeaway orders on New Year’s Eve was not very large, and by 1pm, Shen Jinfeng had sent out a total of 10 takeaways. "Although there are not many orders, the delivery fee per order is much higher than usual. I earned more than 9,000 yuan in the month of the Spring Festival last year. This year, I can earn more than 10,000 yuan by getting all kinds of rewards for rushing orders during the Spring Festival." Shen Jinfeng said, "Earn more money and go back to my hometown in Anhui on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to reunite with my family."

In addition to strengthening the incentive mechanism for enterprises, the government has also taken action. Years ago, the relevant departments of Shenzhen made it clear that the express delivery and takeaway delivery during the Spring Festival will be subsidized by the municipal finance by 1 yuan per order. Frontline workers in construction, tourism, sanitation, manufacturing and other industries can also receive corresponding government subsidies.

"Although the Spring Festival is not around my family, I am very happy to deliver the meals to the guests in time so that they can eat hot meals and have a happy New Year," Shen Jinfeng said.

Yang Lei said that now that the society generally recognizes the courier brother more, it is still relatively happy to ensure that residents receive the goods they need in time during the Spring Festival. "Every package delivered every day is a piece of love," he said.

They are the epitome of tens of thousands of express delivery brothers who stay deep on duty during the Spring Festival, contributing to the better reunion of others and running hard for their own better reunion. Shen Jinfeng said: "I believe good days are still ahead!"
