The fourth scientific expedition of finless porpoise in the whole Yangtze River basin was officially launched a few days ago. In the past two days, a scientific research team consisting of two scientific research vessels and more than 30 members is conducting a scientific investigation in the Nantong section of the Yangtze River.

This is a picture taken yesterday (September 24th) afternoon by expedition members in the waters near Wushan, Nantong section of the Yangtze River. Two finless porpoises are playing in the water, and their heads are exposed from time to time. Since entering the Nantong section of the Yangtze River on the 21st, the expedition team has observed finless porpoises in many rivers.

In addition to routine visual observation, passive acoustics, image-assisted observation system, environmental DNA technology and other means have been added in this expedition, so as to obtain more comprehensive observation data of finless porpoises and accurately grasp the population distribution and habitat environment of finless porpoises.

The finless porpoise is a national first-class protected aquatic wild animal, and it is an important indicator species to evaluate the ecosystem status of the Yangtze River. This expedition is the fourth scientific investigation of finless porpoises in the whole Yangtze River basin after 2006, 2012 and 2017, and it is also the first systematic investigation of species in the Yangtze River basin after the implementation of a comprehensive ban on fishing in the Yangtze River.

It is understood that the scientific research will be carried out simultaneously in several sections of the Yangtze River. After statistical analysis, the scientific research results will be released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to provide more scientific support for the next stage of Yangtze River protection.
